Opinión de un comprador: A very interesting story about spies, treason, submarine hunting. It akes place during the cold war, but contrary to the "Red storm rising" book from the same author, it is still readable as something that could have happened.
Form my point of view, not the best book from Tom Clancy, yest still highly advisable.

Opinión de un comprador: The october Faction originated as a comic series and began releasing in dos mil catorce with the creative team of Steve Niles (writer) and Damien Worm (illustrator). The comic series has 3 volumes totalling dieciocho issues, this trade collects the first 2 (doce issues) of the series. There are also two other stories that titled Deadly Season and Supernatural Dreams. Comixology appears to not include these issue in the same category as the first dieciocho so I can only guess these are separate stories from the base series. October Faction had gained more attention with the release of a Netflix adaptation that was released in 2020, but I was interested in picking up the comic prior to my knowledge of the series being released.
I had my eye on this comic from my local book shop for maybe 2 years but never got around to buying it, as at that time I was more focused on superhero comics etc. With the more and more I read, it turned out I grew to favour smaller titles of darker nature, and by chance I went to the bookshop and the first volume was on sale for £5, so I picked it up without hesitation. Having read and enjoyed the first volume, I opted to pick up this collection as it was a reasonable price and collected the first 2 volumes in a nice trade. After reading the volume 1 I initially purchased I learned there was a Netflix series, I attempted to watch the first episode but felt it missed several points early in the comic and stopped watching as I much preferred the comic anyways.
For those unfamiliar with the story I will briefly go over some of it. This will contain some mild spoilers for the first issue or so but I can't really go into the story without mentioning a few of these points, I will later briefly give some of the reasons I prefer the comic to the Netflix adaptation.
This story focuses on the Allan family, an interesting lot to say the least. We have Frederick (father), Deloris (mother) and their two kids Vivian and Geoff, Frederick and Deloris are monster hunters and their children who have finished school want to join the family business. Frederick is naturally against this, as it is a dangerous path that he wishes them to not pursue, especially given Frederick and Deloris gave it up for the safety of their children. Frederick and Deloris have a distant relationship, while Frederick doesn't want to waste his knowledge he teaches a class about monsters while Deloris does her own thing. They rarely see eachother and have separate bedrooms giving insight of a failing relationship. Things take a turn when Deloris' actions bring the monsters back into the Allan's life, bringing Frederick and Deloris out of retirement to protect their family.
There are a few reasons I stopped watching the adaptation. The first being that the opening doesn't appear to be faithful to the original, Frederick and Deloris are not distant and the kids are completely unaware of the '"family business". This is vital to setting the tone of the story and undermines the creators intentions and story telling. The children within the first few pages are already unique as they can use magic and see spirits, instead of them learning of their family dark secret. Already knowing what makes the family special fits the narrative way better than it being uncovered later. Another reason, and probably the biggest is the artwork. The artwork in this comic is stellar. It's dark, not too detailed drawing our attention to what the artist wants us to see, and when there is something the artist wants us to see it pops all the more, I can't recall of a few but there is a jar shown on a table in the second half of the comic and is brought up again, showing the creators only want to show us what needs to be seen instead of flooding every indicador with reader overload. This is something that really can't be replicated in live action format, and is a shame because in the comic we use our imagination to connect the panels, more so here than other comics, there is a lot of óptica story telling in this comic. When adapted to a series we digest it as a whole and can see everything, there's not much room for imagination, it's fine for the visual story telling but we sacrifice the darkness of the mood that is expertly crafted here. The art style is distinct and a reason why I love little dark gems like this, it gives me Tim Burton vibes with the darkness and the slimness of the character illustrations.
Overall this was a fantastic comic, I mean I bought vol. 1 twice just for perspective. The story itself is engaging but not a heavily hable driven story which is why the artwork is so crucial to this comic, and it meshes flawlessly. I'm not a strong reader and usually takes me quite awhile to read a comic but this was a very quick read, I read this in maybe an hour, usually comics this size would take me at least double that time, which is another reason I dropped the series, why spend a dozen hours watching a series when I can read the comic which I prefer in a vastly shorter period of time? The characters are also a highpoint of this series, each unique with individual characteristics and I was drawn to the Allan family immediately, but Lucas and Robot Face were great characters that supported the story. Each character serves a purpose and the story isn't inflated with too large of a cast with many characters that we learn more about later. The only minor gripe I could think of is that maybe the story could have done slightly more, what it could've done I have no iniciativa but regardless was enjoyable and am glad I picked up this collection. Another thing that annoys me that has nothing to do with the comic or story is why they didn't include vol. 3 in this collection or release a second volume that could contain vol. 3 and the other two volumes. It feels like the publisher wanted a quick cash in on the series being adapted to Netflix. Beyond those two things this was an exceptional read, it was dark but still had moments of comedy, the children's reaction to Frederick's actions and the family with the hearse, it made it feel imperial and human despite this unnatural family and circumstance.
If anyone is considering picking this up I urge you to do so especially if you like darker comics. I will be giving this a 4 star rating but for me it's a solid 4.5 and will easily be on display on my limited shelf space instead of going into a plastic tub, to be left for the rest of time or unless I want to read it on a whim. This is a series I look forward to picking up the rest of. Despite my opinions of the adaptation I regalo't want to put anyone off of it, I would however urge anyone curious to perhaps read the comic first as this is the writers intended vision for the story. In the back of the collection is a cover gallery and an interview with Niles and Worm about the comic as well as the adaptation. Niles seemed to be positive about the adaptation so who knows I may give it another chance one day.

Opinión de un comprador: Despite being fully on-side when starting the book, I was very disappointed, and struggled to finish. The book is tedious. It’s a bare, linear recounting of one small thread of a much richer story.
Curiously, for the tale of a revolution of workers, peasants and soldiers, it’s not the least interested in any of those groups. Instead, the book spends the vast majority of its time in stuffy meeting rooms of men voting on minutiae. Rarely is there any sense of what any of this procedural tedium might result in, outside. We just find out how many delegates of which committee voting in favour of the motion to postpone the re-election of a committee to. .. You get the picture. For chapter after chapter.
It’s as if Mieville has sat in a library and forensically pieced together a línea de tiempo, from a collection of the minutes of meetings. Yet he provides no context, no historical perspective, no analysis.
For the first three quarters of the book’s length, the tedium is distinga. We count the months waiting for october - ‘oh God, it’s only June’. The last hundred or so pages pick up, but in fact the events of October seem rushed. The actual days of revolutionary insurrection are zipped over. The book is terribly paced, and the promise of its title unfulfilled. There is a calzoncillo epilogue that promises to provide a little insight into the revolution’s ultimate degradation and failure, but again - it’s rushed over.
One término gripe - though the book fails to render any but a handful of characters identifiable, one of them is the doomed Tzar Nicolas. We are treated to a few anecdotes that bring him (and his wife) to life on the page. So why, then, does the book not even bother to mention his death? Did the author forget?

Opinión de un comprador: Pedí el camel en corte S, y el pigmento no es camel, es un mostaza parda que no me gustó nada. Cuento ciento sesenta y ocho y peso 56kg y de corte es un poco más importante de lo esperado, aunque es perfecto si deseas transportar múltiples capas debajo. No contrapeso nada y me proporciona la sensación de que es un poquito más extenso de lo que se ve en la fotografía.
